The Story Behind the Farm and What We’ll See
Carly and her partner Henry live at “Hiraeth” a 25 acre hobby farm at Merritts Creek, 15 km North of Highfields. As you enter the property you will see extensive fresh earthworks along the very long driveway. Henry is a grader driver with more than 30 years experience and has been drought proofing the farm. After surveying the land he has built two new dams with one that’s 3 meters deep to utilise the rain run-off from Merritts Creek Road. Built in a tear drop effect flowing into V drains, box drains, swales / contours and then flowing into the main existing dam.
Carly is a run away city girl from Sydney; a motorbike courier, bridal boutique seamstress, failed horticulturist, cabinet maker and florist by trade. For the last 7 years she’s been working in the civil construction industry building roads around Australia driving trucks and heavy machinery while living in a caravan saving money to buy her dream property.
Carly would like to share with you the trials and tribulations of living on acreage for the first time. Prompted by the “impending Armageddon”, see how one crazy city girl’s adventures in the country and a dream of being self-sufficient has worked out, with all its ups and downs, gardening when time poor and what’s possible on a budget. Dumpster diving at work, up-cycling from the construction industry, pig face as a fire break, her love of growing healthy soil and obsessive seed collecting. She will have lots of seeds to share, so bring yours and we will have a seed swap with afternoon tea.
