Soil Health

Presented by Tim Nash

You’ve had a chance to Plan Your Plot (January Connect and Learn) and Prepare Your Patch (February Connect and Learn), so here’s an opportunity to focus on the important topic of Soil Health.  Tim will take us through key concepts and practical solutions that will help us understand and nurture soil health in our own gardens:

  • What is soil made of?
    • soil mineral, biological, and organic fractions
    • nutrient cycling
    • view the soil as a living ecosystem rather than as a resource to be mined
  • Characteristics of the main soils in our area
  • Soil chemical and physical properties
  • Key constraints to productivity, and some solutions for improving unproductive or difficult soils

Tim is an environmental and soil scientist with experience providing technical advice for soil management and undertaking revegetation, site stabilisation, erosion and sediment control, soil survey, and natural resource management projects across a range of industries.  A newcomer to permaculture, Tim is enjoying the challenge of working his specialist technical knowledge into his application of the ethics and principles of permaculture.
