Bookings are Essential

To ensure COVID-safe physical distancing can be maintained, there will be a maximum of 36 people able to attend this event.  Please book your place at Eventbrite.

We will offer a wait list, so if you book and are then unable to attend, please let us know immediately so we can offer your place to someone else.

6.15 pm – Connect – Doors Open

Please bring your surplus produce, plants, seeds, books, craft supplies, tools etc. to share with others on the Share Table.  Place your donations on the table when you arrive, and then sharing will open at 8.00pm after the LEARN session.  Browse, ask questions and chat together.

6.30 pm – Learn – Growing Heirloom Vegetables

Presented by Jill Heilbronn and Debbie Bassingthwaighte

Heirloom vegetables bring much diversity, beauty, flavour and colour to our kitchen gardens and tables, so we’ll hear about all the unusual and delicious favourites that Jill and Debbie like to grow.

The beauty of heirlooms is that they’re not owned by large seed corporations so seeds can be easily saved, grown and shared by everyday gardeners in our own backyards. Plus these wonderful seeds can saved by many generations!

Jill and Debbie answer a few questions:

  • What are heirlooms (and how are they different from F1 hybrids)?
  • Why grow heirloom vegetables in our home gardens?
  • Why are they important?
  • What grows well in our bio-region?
  • What could we plant now?
  • What is a calendar of planting ideas through each season of the year?

Jill will also bring a variety of heirloom seedlings to sell that are ready to go into our gardens now. She’ll plant these especially for us, so don’t forget to bring some cash. A great opportunity!

Jill Heilbronn

Jill lives at Hampton and has a wealth of experience growing and selling heirloom seedlings at the Veg Table. You can find her stall at the Toowoomba Farmers Market every Saturday from 7am to 12 noon. Jill propagates and raises a huge range of interesting seedlings and adores the colours and variety of herbs, vegetable seedlings and bee attracting plants that she grows. Debbie Bassingthwaighte

Debbie feels blessed to live with her husband on a peaceful 5 acres in the Lockyer Valley near Toowoomba where she grows many heirloom vegetables in her potager-style kitchen garden. She lives consciously interconnected with nature and community and works as a specialist literacy teacher at her home-based learning centre, Optimise Learning. When time permits Debbie writes a Nurtured Life Blog to inspire others to live a Nurtured Life.

7.45 pm – Connect – Light Supper and Share Table

A light supper will be served (Gluten Free and Vegan options).

Sharing of produce opens at 7.45 pm to allow plenty of time for everyone to place their donations on the Share Table, and then give you the opportunity to browse, connect and make your selections during supper.


Free off-street parking is available under the library (enter from Victoria Street).


The venue has access for wheel chairs, walking frames and strollers as needed. Everyone is welcome (including children with parent supervision).

Do you have surplus?

We encourage you to bring your surplus produce, plants, seeds, books, craft supplies and resources to share with others at our monthly Connect and Learn evenings.

Some ideas of what you could bring include – fruit, vegetables, herbs, eggs, honey, milk, jams, pickles, preserves, jars, ferments, starters, SCOBYs, seeds, plants, seedlings, cuttings, tubers, pots, tools, gardening magazines, permaculture books, recipes, patterns, manure, coffee grounds, compost additives, worms, meal worms, wool, fabric, craft supplies, soap, natural cleaning products, plastic alternatives, produce bags – the list is extensive.

Please bring whatever you can and then take home whatever you need within our culture of generosity and free sharing.
