BOOK HERE \nWhat We’ll Do\n6.30 pm – Learn – Miniature Lives: Identifying insects in your home and garden\nPresented by Michelle Gleeson\, Bugs Ed\nYou can’t avoid insects. They scurry past us in the kitchen\, pop up in our gardens\, or are presented to us in jars by inquisitive children.  Despite encountering them on a daily basis\, most people don’t know an aphid from an antlion.  As keen gardeners\, we encounter many different types of insects.  But just what is defoliating your gardenias\, leaving strange lumps and bumps on your wattles\, or making a meal out of your basil?  On the other hand\, which beneficial insects do we want to encourage into our gardens to help pollinate our plants or wage war against pests? \n  \nWhat We’ll Learn\n\nWhat is an insect and how does it differ from other minibeasts you find in your garden?\nWhat are the major groups or Orders of insects and how can you identify them?\nWhich insects cause damage to our gardens and which ones are beneficial\nHow we can discourage the pests and encourage the beneficials\, without using chemicals?\nYou’ll also see some amazing cases or preserved insects and arachnids from around the world and some live local insects.\n\n  \nAbout Michelle Gleeson\nMichelle Gleeson (nee Larsen)\, is known to those around her as ‘the bug lady’ – no matter how she introduces herself!  She is an entomologist and the director and co–founder of Bugs Ed.\, an educational company that presents a range of hands–on insect workshops throughout Queensland.  She has also been an Adjunct Industry Fellow at The University of Queensland’s School of Biological Sciences\, collaborating on biological science outreach programs in remote schools and working on various field research projects. \nMichelle’s obsession with insects started at an early age. A brief frisking by her parents would usually turn up an array of critters on her person (some live\, some dead\, some very squashed).  Michelle was around eight when she announced to her family her aspirations to be an entomologist when she grew up and this passion continued throughout her entire schooling\, eventually leading her to university\, where she completed a Bachelor of Science majoring in Entomology and first-class Honours in Entomology \nMichelle’s job as an entomologist is incredibly diverse.  One day she might be taking her pet stick insects to visit a class of kindergarten students\, the next she is teaching Year 11 biology students how to pin out and display an insect collection.  Her summers often involve research projects out in the bush\, and she also regularly films insect–themed stories with children’s TV shows.  A skilled insect ‘wrangler’\, she has worked on television commercials and film shoots\, and has been lucky enough to work on set with one of her idols\, Sir David Attenborough. \nAdditional info: \nMichelle has published a book with CSIRO Publishing called Miniature Lives – identifying insects in your home and garden to teach everyday people how to identify insects they find around their homes or gardens. It will be available for purchase and the cost is $49.95. Cash payments only (or you can do a direct deposit on your phone and show me the screen). \n  \n7.45 pm – Connect – Light Supper (provided) and Share Table\nA light supper will be served (including Gluten Free and Vegan options). \nPlease bring your own KeepCup or mug so we can reduce waste. \nSharing of produce on the Share Table opens after the presentation to allow plenty of time for everyone to place their donations\, and then allow you to browse\, connect and make your selections during supper. \n  \nParking\nFree off-street parking is available under the library (enter from Victoria Street). \n\nAccess\nThe venue has access for wheelchairs\, walking frames\, and strollers as needed. Although her formal qualifications are not especially relevant to the talk – with a professional background in law and government policy – she has practised permaculture in home and community gardens for over 20 years and has a Permaculture Design Certificate. She also dabbles in bushcare and is currently Secretary of the Friends of the Escarpment Parks which cares for 16 bushland parks in Toowoomba. She moved to Toowoomba 4 years ago and has been busy setting up a 1/4 acre food and bush garden in town for a modest\, but hopefully active and well nourished\, retirement. \n7.45 pm – Connect – Light Supper (provided) and Share Table\nA light supper will be served (including Gluten Free and Vegan options). \nPlease bring your own KeepCup or mug so we can reduce waste. \nSharing of produce on the Share Table opens after the presentation to allow plenty of time for everyone to place their donations\, and then allow you to browse\, connect and make your selections during supper. \nParking\nFree off-street parking is available under the library (enter from Victoria Street).Access \nThe venue has access for wheelchairs\, walking frames\, and strollers as needed. Tea\nSeed Raising Mixes\n Mulches\n\n\n\n\n\nIs there enough ground swell for Community Composting in our region? \nAbout Dave Toal\nBorn in Ireland\, I moved to Australia at 2 years of age and grew up near Bribie Island. As a teen\, I worked at “Peach Trees\,” a Peach\, Nectarine and Passionfruit Farm. They were definitely NPK Farmers. Seeing the amount of chemicals and money being used\, it swayed me to use as many organic practices as possible in my own gardens. \nOnce finishing school\, I joined the Army as an Avionics Technician\, working on Blackhawk and MRH90 Helicopters. In 2013 my first son was born\, I moved into teaching Helicopter Types Courses at Oakey. In 2018 when the original Australian Blackhawks retired\, I was made redundant. With Family established in Toowoomba I commuted 2 hours (each way) to Brisbane airport to Teach Aircraft Trade courses at Aviation Australia. \nAfter 2 years\, I decided to join my brother’s company and establish the Eggersmann range of organic recycling equipment. Here we designed Building and Constructing Composting Facilities and providing a wide range of technology options. \nWe established Renew Organics and processed organics for Tamworth Regional Council. I was involved in not just the design and implementation\, but also the site’s operation for its first 12 months. \nAbout 12 months ago I made the difficult decision to leave the business and return to my base trade. I’m now the Training Lead for Boeing Defence Australia’s Contract with the Republic of Singapore Air Force\, teaching how to maintain the CH-47F Chinook Helicopters. \nI’m a father of three\, with a loving and supportive wife Dominique. I have a love of family\, aircraft\, radios and compost. If I’m not making compost or working on developing our little food forest\, I might be using HF Radio to communicate to people all over the world. \n7.45 pm – Connect – Light Supper (provided) and Share Table\nA light supper will be served (including Gluten Free and Vegan options). \nSharing of produce on the Share Table opens after the presentation. This allows plenty of time for everyone to place their donations\, and then allow you to browse\, connect and make your selections during supper \nParking\nFree off-street parking is available under the library (enter from Victoria Street). \nAccess\nThe venue has access for wheelchairs\, walking frames\, and strollers as needed. It’s sited within permaculture zone 1 (which requires regular human input and is visited multiple times each day) for easy access\, observation and harvesting. \nThe location has been carefully selected for the protected microclimate it provides. The mostly tropical food plants are unlikely to thrive in other areas of the property because they grow naturally in rainforest understorey habitats\, are frost-sensitive and require filtered sunlight and consistent water. However\, they are flourishing here. \nThis garden area is informal and densely planted with gently curving paths\, dappled shade trellises\, productive raised beds\, and rotund terracotta pots. \nThe aim is to have leafy greens\, fruit\, and aromatic spices to stimulate culinary creativity and wellbeing. The colours and scents of foliage\, fruits and flowers have been selected to weave a year-long tapestry. \nSome features include: \n\n\n\n\n\nlarge pots for easy harvest of rhizomes such as ginger\, turmeric and galangal\nbog garden pots for water-loving plants\ndeciduous and evergreen fruit trees\, vertical climbing vines\, and perennial and annual ground covers\na colour palette of tropical shades of green\, contrasted with hues of yellow\, orange and purple foliage\, with fruit and flowers across all seasons.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nDebbie Bassingthwaighte\nDebbie is an educator and designer deeply interested in permaculture-inspired resilience and abundance.  She was the founding President of Permaculture Toowoomba Inc. and continues to enjoy an active involvement on the management committee. \nLiving on a peaceful 5 acres at Postmans Ridge (a productive Land for Wildlife property that nourishes family and friends)\, Debbie feels consciously interconnected with nature and community.  She strives to live a simple\, proactive life where her positive handprint is greater than her negative footprint. \nYou might also like to see Debbie’s website\, Nurtured Life\, focused on empowering resilience as a curator of living wisdom.  It includes a potpourri of blog posts for inspiration\, links to events\, and resources (recipes\, plant profiles\, and bookshelf) to build skills and knowledge. \nDebbie writes a free monthly Nurture Notes Newsletter for anyone interested in subscribing. \nConnect with Debbie at her Website | Facebook | Instagram | Newsletter \n\n\n \n7.45 pm – Connect – Light Supper (provided) and Share Table\nA light supper will be served (including Gluten Free and Vegan options). \nPlease bring your own KeepCup or mug so we can reduce waste. \nSharing of produce on the Share Table opens after the presentation to allow plenty of time for everyone to place their donations\, and then allow you to browse\, connect and make your selections during supper \nParking\nFree off-street parking is available under the library (enter from Victoria Street). \nAccess\nThe venue has access for wheelchairs\, walking frames\, and strollers as needed. The information covers the extensive area administered by the Toowoomba Regional Council. \nThere is so much variety across the region: the deep red\, volcanic soils of the Great Dividing Range; the “shrink and swell” black soils of the Darling Downs; alluvial soils; and shallow\, sandstone soils on ridges. Some areas suffer heavy frosts in winter\, and rainfall differs markedly from east to west. You need to take all these factors into consideration when deciding what to plant. \nGrowing the plants that are native to our Toowoomba region is the best option for you because they have adapted to our climate and soils over millennia\, and best for native fauna because they have evolved with these plants. \nWhat does our fauna need? \n\nTrees and shrubs to provide cover and nesting sites for birds\nFlowers and fruits to feed birds\, butterflies\, beetles\, and bees\nLow growing plants to protect the soil and offer shelter to small fauna\nRockeries and hollow logs to shield skinks and lizards\nA reed-fringed pond that will quickly become home to frogs and attract jewel-like dragon and damsel flies\n\nWith the right plants and the right design\, your garden can become a haven for our unique native wildlife. \nThere is a self-assessment form that will help you to determine  how wildlife friendly your garden is and how to make it even more of a haven for our native fauna.  If you would like to know more please contact us below\, and we will respond. Our goal is to establish a group of like-minded people who will promote gardens as refugia for our  wildlife. \n\n\n7.45 pm – Connect – Light Supper (provided) and Share Table\nA light supper will be served (including Gluten Free and Vegan options). \nPlease bring your own KeepCup or mug so we can reduce waste. \nSharing of produce on the Share Table opens after the presentation to allow plenty of time for everyone to place their donations\, and then allow you to browse\, connect and make your selections during supper \nShare Table\nDo you have surplus? \nWe encourage you to bring your surplus produce\, plants\, seeds\, books\, craft supplies\, and resources to share with others at our monthly Connect and Learn evenings. \nSome ideas of what you could bring include – fruit\, vegetables\, herbs\, eggs\, honey\, milk\, jams\, pickles\, preserves\, jars\, ferments\, starters\, SCOBYs\, seeds\, plants\, seedlings\, cuttings\, tubers\, pots\, tools\, gardening magazines\, permaculture books\, recipes\, patterns\, manure\, coffee grounds\, compost additives\, worms\, mealworms\, wool\, fabric\, craft supplies\, soap\, natural cleaning products\, plastic alternatives\, produce bags – the list is extensive. \nPlease bring whatever you can and then take home whatever you need within our culture of generosity and free sharing \nMembership\n2024 Membership \n\nAnnual Membership of Permaculture Toowoomba Inc. is due by 31 December each year.\nIt’s only $40 per person or $30 for a second or subsequent adult living in the same home.\nIt’s pro rata 1/2 price for 1/2 year after 30 June.\nFinancial Members can attend events and workshops during the year at no cost.\nYou can pay your membership for 2024 at checkout when you book to attend this event.\nMembership forms will be available at the event for anyone wishing to join\, or available here for download at http://www.permaculturetoowoomba.com.au/membership/\n\nParking\nFree off-street parking is available under the library (enter from Victoria Street). \nAccess\nThe venue has access for wheelchairs\, walking frames\, and strollers as needed. Book Here \nWhat We’ll Do\n6.30 pm – Learn – Making Money with Permaculture \nPresented by Adam Gould \nMaking money might not be your goal\, but this presentation will expand your understanding of how we perceive the value of something and its real value. \nHave you ever thought about: \n\nHow much land area or space\, or how little\, is required?\nGrowing vegetables vs saving heirloom seeds?\nBreeding regular chickens vs rare heritage breeds?\nBreeding cattle vs rare breeds?\nGrowing plantation timber vs timber for firewood?\nRestoring tools?\nRestoring furniture?\n\nHere’s one example. A pumpkin you grow may have $5-$10 worth of flesh to cook and eat. The same pumpkin might have $10-$25 worth of seeds if the seed is saved correctly.  This seed is usually thrown away\, fed to chooks or added to the compost. Seed-saving businesses can sell the same seed for $100-$250 from one single pumpkin. \nAbout Adam\nAdam is a civil engineer at local government and a permaculture hobby farmer.  His farm is on the southern side of Toowoomba and he’s trying to establish a more sustainable lifestyle where most fresh food is grown on the farm.  Adam’s passions involve many peculiar interests that include breeding quail and poultry\, growing rare seeds to sell\, making biochar\, growing unusual vegetables\, and much more. \n\n\n \n7.45 pm – Connect – Light Supper (provided) and Share Table\nA light supper will be served (including Gluten Free and Vegan options). It’s wonderful to see the diverse garden styles\, approaches\, and plants that can be grown in our bioregion. \nSo this month David Collins and Ilka Seibel will take us on a virtual tour of their newly created small urban garden. \nWhat We’ll See\nThis garden is a quiet retreat for family\, friends and Fergus.  We’ll be taken on a photographic tour as David and Ilka highlight the evolving design of their garden and tell us about everything they’ve planted\, grown\, and constructed (mostly using found and recycled materials) to create a holistic growing space. We’ll also hear about their future plans and aspirations for this productive garden space. \nThe garden is a safe place and includes: \n\nBoth a productive vegetable garden and a garden to raise plants from seeds to vegetables\nFood for the kitchen\, and to be pickled\, fermented or dried for the seasons to come\nA garden for pollinators and birds to nest\nA garden to have the chickens\nA garden to house a worm colony\nA place for Fergus to lay in the sun\nA place to enjoy our outdoor kitchen\n\nThe Story Behind the Garden\nA few words from Ilka and David: \nWe had little experience in gardening other than a few pots of herbs David had grown before we moved to our current home. We both attended a Permaculture Design Course with Tom Kendall in Kin Kin last September.  Since then we have built 15 raised Garden Beds (all from recycled and repurposed material)\, and one large in-ground garden bed that we will plant out for next Spring\, plus nearly 50 herb plants in pots. \nWe built the flower garden first to keep David busy as his body deteriorates\, then the vegetables started and they are now our main focus. \nWe have now completed our first full year and have already started planning for next Spring/Summer with the addition of a large arch/tunnel to grow climbing vegetables\, increased amounts of pollinators and bee food\, and maybe even an Espalier fruit tree or two. \n\n\n \n7.45 pm – Connect – Light Supper (provided) and Share Table\nA light supper will be served (including Gluten Free and Vegan options). \nPlease bring whatever you can and then take home whatever you need within our culture of generosity and free sharing \nMembership\n2024 Membership Renewals are now due for all members \n\nAnnual Membership of Permaculture Toowoomba Inc. is due by 31 December each year.\nIt’s only $40 per person or $30 for a second or subsequent adult living in the same home.\nFinancial Members can attend events and workshops during the year at no cost.\nYou can pay your membership for 2024 at checkout when you book to attend this event.\nMembership forms will be available at the event for anyone wishing to join\, or available here for download at http://www.permaculturetoowoomba.com.au/membership/\n\nParking\nFree off-street parking is available under the library (enter from Victoria Street). \nAccess\nThe venue has access for wheelchairs\, walking frames\, and strollers as needed.
